Thanks for the info ficbot. I thought the kindle did read multi-formats because the website says this about it:

Kindle (AZW), TXT, Audible (Audible Enhanced (AA, AAX)), MP3, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively; PDF, HTML, DOC, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP through conversion.

I thought the through conversion part meant just the BMP... but from what you're saying maybe it means all the things listed there from PDF onward.
