I don't know why this is happening to you, GrumpyReader. So far, I have kept my original US-registered account, and have had no problems. I've been able to buy books that have the geographic restrictions, and without paying the extra wireless fee or VAT. And that's without trying to hide my IP address.
Have you tried changing your country on the Manage Your Kindle page?
