I would NOT buy a Kindle Reader as a backup. I believe in spreading my tech knowedge around -- that is, learn about new things. So I would buy one of the rival apps. I recently was corresponding with someone about the Q7, which is really just a small computer. It has a color screen, and I would use it as a backup -- it's not much over $200.
