I was an English major and I bet that nearly every text I ever used would be available digitally. I bet more than half of it would be available for free at Project Gutenberg. There was one course I took which involved a lot of footnoted texts, and another theory course that would have been mostly journal articles (which in my experience tend to be poorly formatted PDF files, if available at all). But by far the bulk of it was novels and short stories. Fully two thirds of the contents of my Norton Anthology is probably free on-line somewhere. I would have needed access to the paper copies to footnote my papers, but I could have done the bulk of my reading digitally quite easily had ebook readers been available then. When I think pf the $20 I spent for a copy or Oroonoko which we spent a whopping two class periods on and which I did not use in a paper...I could have saved a fortune if I had Google Books, Project Gutenberg and my Sony then.
