Orlando Fige's "The Whisperers," private life in Stalin's Russia.
If you ever want to understand what life was like under an oppressive regime then this book has most of the answers. Many people did all they could to continue their lives in a 'normal' manner; millions more acquiesced, both groups were routinely enslaved and liquidated. Which makes the recent libel case, started by Stalin's grandson, even harder to understand. Surely even he can see, with the benefit of history and hindsight, that the man was a monster?
