Bad memory?

Newbie here. I've checked older posts and seen nothing similar to this, but I'm hoping someone can help.

I have a PRS-700 and am having serious problems getting files onto the device. If I use Calibre or the Sony software and attempt to load an ebook (generally .pdf or .epub format), it takes up to 10 minutes and often generates errors, even for small files. If I try simply copying the file directly from my hard drive to the database, around 75% of the time it will not copy properly. I end up with a 0 byte file that cannot be deleted or renamed. I have to remove the device from the computer, then scan and fix it when it's reconnected, then delete the file. It sometimes take 3+ repetitions to get the file loaded onto the Reader. Once it succeeds, there are no problems with reading the file, so I don't think the problem is with the ebooks I'm loading (most are from Project Gutenberg). I have the same problem on two different PCs - one running Vista Ultimate 32 bit, one running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I have an SD card, and if I place that in my card reader and copy files manually to it, everything is fine. I load it into the Reader, it refreshes its database and everything works. It's just nearly impossible to get files onto the internal storage in the device. I've tried resetting it and formatting the internal memory repeatedly, but no change. At this point I'm thinking there's some kind of hardware problem.

Any recommendations?
