You misunderstand the figure. The third is from research I've seen which says that regardless what the music industry does, that third of their previous customers won't pay for music. They've managed to drastically reduce their potential market
by their actions.
And if you think the books industry can't manage the same if they keep on pissing off customers with DRM and regional restrictions? Well...
The demise of the album may be a "virtue" to you, but it also goes to explain a good deal of the drop in revenue which the music industry are seeing, and which mysteriously is never taken into account when they're screaming about piracy being responsible.
Also, many of the GPL products which are not finished would never of recouped their cost or even been viable as commercial products. It's a false analogy, directly in line with the "lost sales" one, to think otherwise...
