Admittedly I don't have as much experience with the transflective class of displays. Though I suppose the backlight might somehow be obscuring the transflector.

It is indeed the Zodiac 2. As I said, with backlight turned completely
off, it's quite readable in sunlight.
My previous device was a Tungsten E, which would not let me turn the backlight completely off. I found out
after retiring it for hardware failure and getting a Zodiac that a hack existed to turn off the backlight entirely, and that it too was usable outdoors it that were done.
