i've not been following this thread and i've only just partially skimmed it, so forgive me if this has already been said.
it seems to me that at the heart of this discussion is the feeling (shared by many) that the download process here is unnecessarily complex / inefficient / inconvenient.
i am happy to report that there is currently a team working on a complete redesign of the upload AND download system, to make it more convenient and streamlined. this is a huge project, so please be patient, it will take some time to implement, but we are listening to feedback about the download process here and we are taking steps to improve it.
