The basic problem is that a device which can display journal-sized PDF files well is just too big to make a convenient, "go anywhere", fiction reader. You need at least an 8", and preferably a 10" screen, to be able to read typical academic papers well, and that makes a big device. The best "portable" readers are the size of paperback books, because that's a size that is convenient to take with you.
