Just on the closing pages of George R Stewart's *Earth Abides* thanks to a chum here who sent me an ebook copy when I couldn't find one for sale anywhere. It was published in my year of birth (1949) and I must have read it a dozen times in my teens. Now -- after forty years away from the book -- I still find it absolutely thrilling, often quite profound and beautifully written. One of the first post-world's end novels with so many copy-cats of the cencept, there are still few to beat *Earth Abides*. Highly recommended.
