I've packed up and shipped books on three occasions so far and find it most satisfying since my local libraries don't want my treasures, for some reason.
Most libraries don't take donations. If they do, it's for book sales.

If someone is in the US and wants to donate books, check the AAUW. It's a fund for women going back to school and gives out scholarships. There are local branches, and most of them hold (awesome) book sales yearly.
