This would only actually be a benefit if they don't go an do something stupid like trying to introduce their own ebook format.

Firstly, they do no dominate the smartphone market unless you decide to use some random stat like web traffic and the fact that so many believe they do is a credit to their marketing dept for convincing people it's true.
Secondly, it wasn't the quality of the hardware that helped them do so well with the ipod, it was having the total package of good looking hardware, the comparative ease of use from itunes for synching and the itunes store for buying content.
