What is a cup fairy?

I almost let this one go cos I prefer Pshrynk's explanation!

But I know some people in the UK will know the sort of cake I had today as a fairy cake, and not as a cup cake (when I was growing up, cupcakes were rather gooey, stodgy things with a thick flat layer of greasy "icing" on top - something like this, but the top was completely flat:
)

Fairy cakes, on the other hand (plate?) range from things like this (and I really apologise for where I found the image )
to things like this: - which is what seems to be called cupcakes now. Hence the / between cup and fairy

Aren't you glad you asked?
