There are sites which have books in Kindle format that are in the public domain:
www.feedbooks.com
I just downloaded their "Kindle Download Guide" last night and got some public domain books for free:
- The Arabian Nights
- Hamlet
- Strange Case of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde
- Don Quixote
- A Tale of Two Cities
- Through the Looking Glass
- Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
- The Count of Monte Cristo
- Dracula's Guest
That site also has books that are not Public Domain. (free) But they won't have the selection that Amazon has.
I hate to say it, since I love my Kindle 2, but you should sell it and get an eBook reader that is more friendly internationally. Like a Sony or something. Sell it to someone in the USA if you can, so they don't run into the same troubles.
Otherwise, your selection is going to suffer.
I did read somewhere about a Japanese guy who bought a Kindle 2 and went to the trouble of opening a bank account in US funds so that he could shop at Amazon. Is that an option for you? If so, and if you're willing to do it, that might be your best route.
