Actually the usual methylated spirits form of denatured alcohol is supposed to be safe for most forms of plastics and is often used to clean plastic camera lenses. There are other forms of denatured alcohol though, and sometimes acetone or MEK will be used as the poison additive instead of methyl alcohol. Acetone or MEK will definitely dull a plastic finish.

You are probably exactly right there, especially if you do not know for sure what was used to poison the ethyl alcohol to denature it.
