Dunno how the thread got to this topic but there are ways to help satisfy the urge for carbonation, sweetness pretty cheaply. There is this device I have:

Here is another: http://www.sodastreamusa.com/

But you can make your own flavorings as well as control the total carbonation...I use something called Stevia as a sweetener it is 100% natural and zero carbs and been used for 1000s of years...it has what can be a somewhat odd flavor for some. It can have a slight licorice taste but it is TONS sweeter than sugar or any of the artificial sweeteners...but I learned to like it simply because we consume just way too much sugar (other carbs as well) these days. Just a note...if you do look for stevia in the market beware some brands actually add either sugar, maltodextrin (not good for many people and debatable for diabetics) or artificial sweetener...buy the pure extract/powder...but go VERY easy with it. I buy a bottle of pure stevia powder and I think it is 3-4oz and it will last me about a year or more...costs about $5-$6...and you can bake with it but need to compensate for the lost bulk compared to sugar or other sweetener options.

What I like is I can always have fresh soda ready in an instant. There are even small bottles you can fill, close up and take with you or just store in the fridge.

Also, I KNOW what is in the beverage and know it's all healthy, well, as healthy as food is anymore now that it's nothing more than an assembly line product with dubious genetic heritage... I like to use fresh juices though I have been known to, well, experiment...and not all experiments are, well, edible?!?!

Anyway, just adding there is a safer (for your teeth and stomach as well) way to go...and yeah a bottle of tonic water is OK too but it is still not fresh and will go flat and cost a lot more (I think anyway)...plus I got the cool Penguin looking device because it was fun!!
