I agree, I've found it's better to start gently and work up to nasty, that way you don't have to be any nastier than is actually required. Besides, if you ever do have to get really nasty, folks remember it later and are more likely to respond to gentleness the next time. Of course that last bit applies better in individual interaction than the more anonymous level currently under discussion.
