BTW, yes Second Course was a giveaway for a while (in return for linking to his web site). I dug out my copy and this is how the the title page starts:

So, clearly it's book 2. This is the first paragraph:

The interstellar freighter Volante powered through space, her streamlined flanks speckled with pinpoints of light from distant stars. In the flight deck, Hal Spacejock was studying the main viewscreen from his customary stance in the pilot’s chair — hands clasped behind his head, boots up on the flight console and a cup of coffee at his side.
