Defective library

My calibre library, on an ntfs external disk, is defective. Don't know why. But now I'm stuck. I can't correct the library or erase it -- I just get disk-read errors. And I can't open calibre if I don't give access to that folder -- I get an error box that says "Could not access...." and then calibre does not open.

I've copied everything else off that disk to others, so I could simply reformat it (this time to good old FAT32, which is so much more welcome on non-MS OSes). But... how do I get calibre to quit looking for the folder at start-up?

I presume that there's a file somewhere that needs erasing... but where?

I'm running OS X 10.6.1, with a very recent build of calibre but since I can't open it I can't give a number...

Thanks for your help...
