As far as the Kindle is concerned, you can download via the Whispernet or your computer. The same goes for the new Sony 900 that is coming out in December. If you are confused about which reader would work best for you, you can check out the
Ebook Reader Matrix in MR's Wiki. It has a lot of great information on available readers and is easy to use to make comparisons.
