I know I can break the drm, but currently you must have ADE installed and use it to download the file so that it can be converted. My choice would be to never have ADE on my computer.

The problem will be then that if you do not have ADE, then most ePub won't be accessible to you. The odds are that most of the readers that support ePub with DRM will be using ADE. So unless you plan on buying a Kindle or a Jetbook, you may very well be out of luck as far as staying away from ADE. Sure you can stick with your Gen3 and Mobipocket, but you won't get any books in Mobipocket from any new publishers who are not based in the US.
