While a european owner of a sony reader is worse off than their american equivalent they can still use ePub quite happily just like any of those other devices when they want to buy some ebooks.

Yes, but with the 505 I don't think the ePub support was DRM, was it? So buying a DRM ePub was no help - you still needed to strip it so you could use it on the 505. Which tool time, effort, and knowledge, and was one of the complaints at the start of this thread. I know the 300/600 support of DRM ePub alleviates that issue somewhat, but that is a very recent development since the release of those devices.
Opportunitstic of Sony to jump on the ePub bandwagon - some may say that's vision, but if so it's been blurred for many years.
