Actually, the 300 has a tad bit more contrast than the 505. The background is barely whiter, and the letters seem about the same but the edges are a bit sharper. (This is from looking at them under magnification, where you can see some grey image elements along the characters of the 505, whereas this is not really evident on the 300.) For full disclosure, both devices provide excellent contrast for reading.
I have both a 505 and a 300, and I wouldn't feel shortchanged by the 300. Both are great for reading, and I haven't read anything on my 505 since I got the 300 almost a month ago and loaded it up. I never used the mp3 or memory card features, and I can (and do!) carry the 300 in my pants pocket all the time.
