aw. it might sound silly but there's something really sweet about a dog that size being afraid of the dark and climbing into bed with you for comfort.

i feel that way (most of the time...) about my cats. i didn't want a cat, wasn't looking for a cat, and then suddenly i found myself with *two* cats. but when someone says "just give them away, then you could go away on weekends whenever you want" i just stare at them, shocked they could even suggest such a thing. they get to you, don't they ?

i try not to think about the day when i won't have my cats anymore but i'm not sure i'd get another, at least not right away. partly because like you said you can't "replace" them, and partly because (like you said...) it does make holidays a lot more complicated.
