Okay - I did get a solution from Sony over the phone; eBook Library hides files all over the place on your Mac and you have to get rid of them all to do a clean re-install - which did resolve the problem, finally.

Here's the list:

Delete /Library/eBookLibrary
Delete /Users/(yourname)/Library/Preferences/Sony Corporation
Delete /Users/(yourname)/Library/Preferences/fsk
Delete /Users/(yourname)/Library/Marlin

Reinstall software.
