I think ghastly school experiences put most people off learning a foreign language for the rest of their lives.
Modern "adult education" languages classes are completely different to the way that languages were taught in British schools 30 years ago, thankfully! These days, language learning is all learning through speaking, not "rote learning" of grammar. I'd encourage anyone to "have a go".
