They can very often be silly (so silly they make Robin Williams on MDMA look like Steven Wright just washed down a couple of Valium with a pint of vodka), but the ramming crest isn't silly, any more than a spike on a military flail is silly. It's a hazard you learn to live with.

What is the purpose of the "ramming crest"?
