The color *IS* molded into plastic.
Just look at the photos. The plastic body under that peeled layer has the unit color.
They just applied ANOTHER layer of stuff on the body. Not to paint it to the desired color, but to give the surface that nice rubberized touch.
I have had the same problem with a fancy Ikea lamp. After some use the nice rubberized layer started to dissolve in places where I touched the lamp. I removed the rubberized layer from the lamp using microfiber cloth and alcohol.
RobertB. The blue units that you have unpacked to see if the the wrinkles, cracks and peeled surfaces would develop have to be handled by human hands IMHO. Not just sitting there untouched.
