Elizabeth Haydon is OK, but I felt the series kinda degraded towards the end. There's a duology by Alma Alexander you would probably like (Changer of Days/The Hidden Queen). Also, Trudi Canavan's Magician's Guild trilogy (ooh, and I just checked Goodreads to see if I got that right, and the next book is up on there, due out in May. Yippee!)
