seconded !! scrunchy paper ftw ! my cat LOVES that stuff. other cheap toys : empty paper bags, boxes, folded metro tickets, and for a long time the bug's favourite game was played using the cut off corners of empty milk cartons. she would jump on the bed, and i would throw them in the air, and she would leap up and try to catch them (or at least hit them) mid-flight. sadly, i think the laser pointer has spoiled her and the milk-carton tips don't get much interest anymore, which is a shame because that was a really fun game.
don't give her string or rubber bands though (even though, if she's like my cats, she WANTS THEM) ; cats like to eat those, and it can cause severe problems in their intestines.
when i first got my kitten she would attack my toes under the duvet as well. as long as it *was* under the duvet i was protected. but she figures that as long as they're not visible, it's all the same. she doesn't seem to realise that there is a big difference between a thick fluffy duvet and just a sheet...

luckily she doesn't do that *nearly* so much anymore. although she does love it if i slide my hand under the duvet and wiggle my fingers, she will take a flying leap from the other side of the bed to pounce on it.
