I can vouch for (b) too... The second e-ink device I saw was the BeBook2. It was (is) still under development and the 3G implementation was draining the battery even when turned off (one of the things they were working on). So, the battery was removed. But there was a page on the screen that was not a mockup, but a real page (which was shown once the battery was inserted
