EDIT: Ok, I've figured out what I'm doing wrong, in order to change firmware you need an original image to flash. The Sony updater does not allow to downgrade from 1.2.00.18050 to 1.1.00.18040, you have to search inside the updater (Winrar/Winzip) and edit this file with Notepad:
eBookUpdater\assets\updaterAssets\PRSversion.dat
If you change the number from 110018040 to 120018051 then you can downgrade the UK firmware.

I have a UK 505, and after playing around with the PRS customizer to see if I could implement anything else fun, I bricked it. Soft reset would let me access the device as a drive on my computer, and the books showed up fine on the library, but it would do nothing other than that. Hard reset didn't do anything, maybe I was doing it wrong. Anyway, I found a link to a 1.1 US firmware update, but... my 505 is from the UK, so 1.2 is "already updated". There is no 1.2 firmware update on the UK support site, that I could find. So just as I was beginning to lose hope, I opened up the 1.1 firmware update in winrar, extracted it all, did what you said, and voila, my 505 updated to 1.1, then to 1.2, and now it's back to normal!
