Kurt Vonnegut - dark humor, many books in a sci-fi setting and there is meaning behind the stories. In this respect his writings are similar to Adams', but otherwise not. Try one, but not Player Piano and not short story collections, go for one of his novels.

I also second Woodhouse, his humor is really great.
