I agree, I have freed up a lot of space by using ebooks!
I would like to see the real figures though, I am sure publishers make a lot more on ebooks than printed books (profit per sale). When they get an ebook sale it is probably a higher profit for them so it's not a lost print sale in that regards (the publishers still make the money).
What I would like to see though, is bookshops embracing ebooks very quickly in a very strong way. For them to survive, they will need to have free internet access for customers, an integrated coffee shop, a huge range of print books (they no longer will need to stock 100 copies of a best seller), and the ability to buy ebooks on the spot from them.
So you walk into a book shop, have a coffee, flick through paper versions, then buy your ebook version and leave. They will need to make the bookshop a kind of communal spot, more like a library. Because my only concern with 'lost print sales' is losing bookshops, that would be a tradgedy.
