I (former German) love the libraries here. The yearly fee is about the cost of 1 pbook. And yes you can get recent releases. The sooner you get on the hold list the better. I'll use The Lost Symbol as an example. In my library there are already 263 holds on that book and they have 81 copies.
But ebooks in libraries are still few and far between. And not all of them offer this service yet (including mine).
