Just leave it for an hour or so.
You can start it after about 20mins to 30mins and it will usually have enough to start and you can then see the little icon on the bottom of the display.
However, when you turn off, there is no indication that it is charging. This is indicated in the user manual that identifies the LEDs and colour changes, (from memory)
