However, I will say that I'm more likely to buy an e-book of a paper volume I already own than a paper volume of an e-book I already own. So maybe the e-book does lead to a loss of a future paper sale? But is that really a loss if I've already bought it once?

Pretty much sum it up for me too.
I also get more new book, rather than re-reading.
