get a dog. ( a real dog, not a clothing accessory). some years ago, back in Colorado our neighbourhood (a good neighbourhood as well) went through a series of tire slashings. we had the cops in to organize a "crime watch" neighbourhood. they said the single most important and effective bit of advice they had to give was to get a dog for your home.
