The battle is quite easy to understand, although one that can't be won so easily.
Sometimes I look at what's being published, and sometimes I see how much money some people are making, and sometimes I think "I could write that stuff in my sleep" and sometimes I actually resolve to do just that and look for another agent and consign my life to the publishing mill.
And then I see the sky change colour or I hear a particularly stirring piece of music and I forget all about that sometimes me and his sometimes ideas and I have to write because I want to convey a moment in time, a feeling, a joy or a sorrow. And although that feeds the soul, it doesn't feed anything more.
So, the war continues. It's an old war. Art vs commerce. Integrity vs bank balance. Servant vs Master.
I doubt it will ever be won.
