$5k if they're lucky and possibly only half that if the publishing houses adopt the 50/50 approach Random House has with advances (50 up front, 50 on publication).
I think the high-flying life I was talking about is the 'media' image of the famous writer who makes millions on best-sellers and owns various homes, some of them on the French Riviera
