Ahoy, Warriah. I'm so sorry about the scratch. That's horrible.

What happened in my case was that a piece of grit (probably a shard of glass or sand) became lodged in the nib of the stylus, and when I used it, the grit was dragged across the top layer of the screen like a scalpel. It's possible the same thing happened to you. Definitely check the nib of your stylus for foreign matter to prevent further damage.

It's probably not much consolation, but please believe me that while your eye is drawn to the scratch right now, after a few days you'll start ignoring it while you read, if you haven't already. I was finding that started to happen even in the day or two I had my reader before I sent it back in, and I'm pretty obsessive about blemishes.
