Not that similar to Dan Brown, but a writer I find unputdownable is Iain Banks (not Iain M. Banks, same guy, different style of books).

I defy anybody to not be captivated by 'The Wasp Factory'; if you like more modern stuff try 'The Business'.

For more comedic dark thrillers, try Christopher Brookmyre - great books!
