Mille thanks for your time and thoughtful advice, Dreams. I've removed most books from the reader now so that there are only a couple of dozen left. The problem persists.

As a last ditch bid before I return the PRS to the shop in the UK (merely scrapping it would be much easier), I'd like to try to format the internal memory with a hard re-set as you and other pals here have suggested.
