That is what they said in their press release, but no one got near the device with a ruler. Also an Engadget photo shows the screen to be less wide than a PRS-600 (the device, not its screen) which is 6 7/8 inches wide.

I don't know why Sony is so secretive about the screen size. They are buying the screen from one of only a couple of places, and either they have an exclusive on the size or they don't. If they do, then their competitors can't buy that size and if they don't their competitors already know what size it is because they could buy them too.
