They've sent the device to Sony for either repair or replacement, and were very polite. Unfortunately, they warned me that Sony is taking two to three weeks to return things.
Luckily, I kept my PRS 500 when I updated. I got it out of the box in which it is stored and opened the cover. Then I had a moment of panic because the screen looked exactly like a broken screen substrate. But I put it onto a mains recharge and it's working beautifully now.
