If I remember correctly (no guarantees here

) when I had my EeePC there was a lot of talk on the forums regarding why 1 modem would work and another wouldn't. It seemed that the one's with the USB memory capability and Windows autorun software were the one's that caused the problem. Linux just saw it as a USB memory stick and not as a modem. There were some workarounds offered but you would have to read them to get the details. My assumption is, that if there was no USB memory to be found then Linux would see the modem. Sounds logical to me, but then I'm no expert
