Google would have a good business model to increase market share for Android OS by segregating a few select books that only Android equipped devices can access. It would lead some folks to install Android desktop emulators long enough (Google hopes) to make their next mobile phone Android OS.

Rest assured decisions like this aren't made on a whim. Some poor schmuck assembled a painfully detailed analysis of marketing objectives, likely outcomes, courses of action, cost impacts (near-term and long-range) and a recommended decision.

The benefit to Sony is they get to avoid the cost of developing and maintaining the unique Linux install that currently drives their Readers, instead receiving an OS from a team that is constantly seeking improvements and enhanced capabilities while maintaining a very svelte install footprint.
