Thank you, frabjous! Your post is a jewel in this thread. I will take a look at your page, and would be grateful if I could see your LaTeX source, to better understanding how you handled things.
In my mind, if typography does keep getting worse (and/or stays as bad as it is in eBooks), eventually small/independent publishers will start to make a killing by putting out far higher quality products than big publishers are... which is yet another reason that I do not see this trend being an unstoppable downward spiral.
