My thought too! That's just so much wasted space... And a missed opportunity (the keyboard is ok, but the bezel should be much smaller!)

I personally like the layout of the Sony's better than the Kindle one. Maybe it's the margins or the font, but it looks a bit... messy.
Nice pictures! I do get the impression the letters on the 600 are a bit softer.
